We offer a walking holiday through this astoundingly beautiful and unspoilt area of North Wales, taking in the wonderful Clywdian range, the lush and attractive Vale of Clwyd through to the dramatic Dee Valley nestling under the Berwyn Range of mountains.


The aim has been to provide a wonderful journey through this area. The routes, developed to take advantage of the scenery, have all been walked comprehensively and tested. The Bed and Breakfast establishments on route have been carefully chosen for their quality, comfort, and excellent breakfasts. All are four star and provide en suite or private facilities with Walkers Welcome assured. We provide luggage transport, route notes, and maps as well as a delicious homemade picnic with choices of menu. Transport back to car (or station) from the end of the walk is provided.


Itinerary

Day 1
Begin by arriving in area and a nights accommodation ready to begin journey next day.

Day 2
The walk begins in a small village nestling in a valley east of the Clwydian range. From here you will cross the hills and spend a night (or two) in the pretty medieval town of Ruthin in the Vale of Clwyd. You can choose:

  • A more strenuous route taking you on a steep climb out of the valley and along hillsides before descending to Ruthin.
  • A less strenuous route that takes you along the valley before a more gradual climb into hills and then down into Ruthin.
  • Another route which takes advantage of the lowest pass through hills and then a gentle descent into Ruthin through fields and woodland.

All routes are approximately 10 miles.

You will stay in accommodation in the centre of Ruthin for 1 or 2 nights. If staying for 2 nights you can may choose to pass some time taking an extra circular walk from Ruthin along the picturesque Lady Bagot's Drive to Clocaenog Forest Wildlife Hide.

Day 3
A less strenuous route through meadows, woodland with streams and along country lanes. Then, a moderate and gradual climb before descending into the dramatic Dee Valley beneath the remote Berwyn Mountain Range. You will stay in a village alongside the River Dee. Approximately 11.5 miles.

Alternatively, you may spend a little longer in location at either end of the walk by getting the bus or a taxi out of Ruthin and joining the route 4 miles on.

Day 4
To Llangollen. Choose from:

  • A mountainous route, with climbs from the River Dee up into the Llantysilio mountains, (start at 130m, highest point 437m, with the option to climb furtherto higher summits).
  • A less demanding route following the river along the valley (mainly on quiet lanes).
  • A route which offers a short climb before returning to the valley.
  • There are three points along the river from which you can opt to take the steam train on the restored railway either all or partway to Llangollen. (runs April to September.)

All approximately 10 miles. Accommodation in centre of Llangollen.

About The Walks:

There are stiles to cross. (Routes without stiles may be provided - please contact us.)

Daily mileage is approximately 10-11.5 miles. On the second leg, there is an option to shorten to 6 miles by taking a bus or taxi. On the third day, there is an option to take a steam train for part or whole of the route. Fares are not included.

Getting There:

By rail to Chester, or Wrexham. Transportation from station to accommodation can be arranged at an extra charge. The nearest international airports are Manchester and Liverpool.

Highlights:

All these routes to Llangollen are extremely pretty, rural, peaceful and with spectacular views. From the summits you can see far and wide across to the Snowdonia mountain range and across to England. In the vales the views of surrounding hills are outstanding There is a plethora of wildlife which notes will tell you what you can look out for. You will come across ancient historic sites of which information will be given. You will be given a translation of Welsh names which will enlighten and sometimes amuse. The package has been designed to give you freedom to walk at your own pace, stop for breaks when you want and spend as long as you want exploring the villages, towns or sites of historical interest along the trail.

Insurance:

We recommend that you take out appropriate holiday insurance covering you against illness, injury, and loss or damage to luggage. This insurance should also cover the possibility of you having to cancel your holiday for any reason.
