Scotland: Short Breaks

Walk Difficulty Fair

The Rob Roy

This short break (3 nights - 3 walking days) takes you into typical scenery of the Scottish Highlands (mountains, lochs and fast flowing rivers), but starts and finishes less than one hour by car (under 2 hours by public transport) from either Glasgow or Edinburgh. The route takes you through the land of highland legend Rob Roy McGregor, following paths that he followed, and stopping at Balquhidder, where he is now buried in the little churchyard.

The walk starts and finishes at Callander, the "gateway to the highland." As with all our holidays and short walking breaks, the itinerary can be adapted to suit your own specific needs. Accommodation is in good quality Bed and Breakfasts or small Hotels. Prices include, accommodation, written maps and guides, and door to door luggage transfer.

Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrive Callander - One hour from Edinburgh and Glasgow by car (or we can arrange transfers from Stirling or the airports or advise on appropriate public transport). Overnight in Callander (you can leave your car here while you walk).

Day 2:
Callander to Balquhidder (22 km/13.75 miles)
Walk by the Falls of Leny and beautiful Loch Lubnaig. Visit the village of "Bonny Strathyre" and see Rob Roy's Grave by the Braes of Balquhidder (Overnight Balquhidder)

Day 3:
Balquhidder to Brig o' Turk (16 km/10 miles)
From Loch Voil, walk through two remote glens, past deserted highland settlements, and over a mountain pass at 500 metres to arrive at Brig o' Turk. (Overnight Brig o' Turk)

Day 4:
Brig o' Turk to Callander (14 km/8.75 miles)
By the banks of Loch Venachar, looking towards Ben Ledi, the walk is quite short and undemanding enough to leave you plenty of time for onward travel after arriving at Callander.
